Our Workshop
Over time we have developed our own methods of printing that range from large scale screens to, incredibly, the humble potato which is still used to produce unique wall hangings. We sell our fabrics by the meter as well as a wide range of products. including table & bed linen, cushion covers, bags and clothing. Some of the intricate processes that go on daily at our workshop require true craftsmanship, precision and a lot of time, these are true art pieces, with as many as 950 block prints per square meter.
Our Story
Kudhinda Fabrics was founded by Ros Byrne in 1990.
Ros was born and educated in Zimbabwe, and studied ceramics and printmaking at Trent Park College of London University, achieving a Bachelor of Education Honours degree in Art. On returning to Zimbabwe she spent several years teaching art to young children at her home art school, and exhibiting her own pottery and print works at Delta and National Galleries.
However, as Ros’ work grew in popularity, she took the decision to expand her studio production and created training and employment for artistic school leavers in communities with low employment rates. And so Kudhinda Fabrics was born, printing with the potato, which is where all the designs originate. And then rubber blocks and screen printing were developed alongside a sewing department.
Today Kudhinda employs 15 staff, some of those original school leavers are still with us! Ros always aimed to create a model workshop, with decent working conditions and we are proud to say that this is the case. The current workshop is located in Ruwa, a small town 20 kms from Harare, and situated fairly close to where the employees live.
